At What Age Does It Stop?
So I’ve waited for the day to happen for several years now. The day where I wake up some Saturday morning at 8 because that’s when I get up for work every day. But no. That doesn’t happen ever. It’s 10, 11, even noon sometimes. And that kills a Saturday. So here’s my question, readers…what has to happen to get me to wake up at the same time every day?
Now, I realize this isn’t the case for all of you. Several of my best friends have to get up at 6 every day for work (disgusting) and so when the weekend comes, they’re up no later than 8. Again, disgusting. But still, they’re not up at 5, 4:30 even, like so many parents were growing up. So I guess that leads me to my next point: Is becoming a parent the necessary thing that will get you up no later than 6 every day?
My grandparents and parents are early risers. Almost every ‘dad’ and ‘grandpa’ I know of is up and reading the paper by 6 in the morning, taking care of business and ready for a nap by 10. It’s the reason they eat dinner at 4:30. It’s natural at that point. But I want to know what happened in their lives to make them wake up so early. Was it me being born? Was it the seventh year of a job having to wake up that early?
The thing is, I really feel like I’d contribute more to society if I was an early riser. I mean, the few times that I’ve had to be up that early, mostly for flights and tee times, I’ve loved it. There’s nothing quite like stepping out your front door into the fresh, dewey morning air. Get some breakfast, a strong cup of coffee at your local Starbucks (hipsters, attack away), maybe just drive around and take in the morning sights. I’d LOVE this. But I can’t get up. I try, I do. I want to get up early and attack the day every night when I go to bed. But when morning comes, it’s impossible. Snooze button every time.
And that leads me to another short point. Why is it so impossible to wake up if you went to bed so eager for that early morning feel? As you can tell, I’m clueless.
So when does it happen, fellow birdies? When should I expect the conversion to take place? I want to be an early riser more than anyone, but I feel like I may be forcing the issue. Maybe if I let it come naturally, through the process that everyone has to go through, it’ll be easier in the end. Or maybe, I’m completely off-base. All I know is, all older people get up early, and even now, I don’t know why it’s so universal. Something HAS to happen, and I refuse to think it just happens as you grow. So please, drop me a line and clue me in. Or even better, share your stories to make me feel better.

25. that is when you start getting up at the ass-crack of dawn on the weekends (when you don’t get blasted the night before) to do chores. or maybe it’s that whole home-ownership thing combined with the fact the triple-digit temps at 9am in the summer…
and i just realized that i spelled ‘early’ ‘erlie’. wow. just, wow.
30. It was all downhill from there.
